Thanks much.  I had to take it back to aes as it wasn't charging.  I'm not 
sure I had the battery in right.  Although the Yaesu pack ( it and charger 
come with the receiver these days), has positive terminals on opposite 
corners, I gather it matters which way it goes in.  As I read your note, 
is there an extra contact for charging?  I don't recall hte mldel, the 
only icom they had was one that didn't have a keypad, just six or so 
buttons, up down for this and that.  I haven't played with this thing 
much, but reasonably impressed, although as you say, the sound isn't that 
great.  Fairly easy to enter frequencies, change modes and write to memory 
from the keypad.
