Chinua Achebe (1930 - 2013)
In the "The Truth of Fiction", Chinua Achebe wrote, "Imaginative literature … does not enslave; it liberates the mind of man. Its truth is not like the canons of orthodoxy or the irrationality of prejudice and superstition. It begins as an adventure in self-discovery and ends in wisdom and humane conscience."
The Guardian published an extensive obituary here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2013/mar/22/chinua-achebe
The New York Times also has one here:

The UW-Madison Libraries hold many titles of this Literary Giant's titles. The libraries also provides access to full-text editions of 6 of his titles that were originally published under the Heinemann African Writers Series that he was Founding Editor of. Anyone with a UW NetID can access these classics remotely at:
http://collections.chadwyck.com.ezproxy.library.wisc.edu/searchTexts.do
If you don't have a NetID, you can still access these online editions from any UW-Madison campus library.
Nelson Mandela articulates the impact Achebe has had on many people when he writes "There was a writer named Chinua Achebe, in whose company the prison walls fell down."

[...] But I fear for you young people because you do not understand how strong is the bond of kinship. You do not know what it is to speak with one voice. And what is the result? An abominable religion has settled among you. A man can now leave his father and his brothers. He can curse the gods of his fathers and his ancestors, like a hunter's dog that suddenly goes mad and turns on his master. I fear for you; I fear for the clan.”
