Celebrating 20 Years Raising Awareness about the
#1 Disease Many Have Never Heard Of
STUDIO CITY, APRIL 14, 2010: May is National Celiac Disease Awareness Month.
Celiac Disease Foundation (CDF) Education Conference and Food Faire (www.celiac.org)
Saturday, May 15, 20108 AM to 4 PM
Marriot Downtown, 333 So. Figueroa St. LA 90071
Please help us raise awareness about Celiac Disease: the #1 disease you’ve never heard of
According to this year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Peter Green, Director of the Celiac Disease Center, Columbia University, and author of “Celiac Disease: The Hidden Epidemic”, Celiac is the #1 genetic autoimmune disease in the country as well as the most common in the world. It is also the most under-diagnosed and/or misdiagnosed with the average delay in diagnosis being 9 years.
• There is no cure. The “cure” requires a life-time commitment to a strict Gluten-Free diet. Ingestion of even a crumb of wheat, rye and/or barley can cause a severe reaction. Related autoimmune diseases include Type 1 Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoporosis and Thyroid Disease.
• Symptoms may include: diarrhea, weight loss/gain, migraine headaches, anemia, and infertility.
Going “Gluten-Free” seems to be a current diet craze. Choices for starting a Gluten-Free diet vary, but for 3 million Americans, a Gluten-Free diet is not a lifestyle choice.
• It is estimated that 3 million of us, 1 in 133 Americans , has Celiac Disease
• Shockingly 97% of them don’t even know it.
Conference attendees will hear about the latest research; connect with local support groups, parents of Celiac children and enjoy:
• Gluten-Free pancake breakfast and luncheon
• Gluten-Free goodie bags
• Gluten-Free food samples
In addition to Dr. Peter Green, speakers at this year’s Conference include:
• Dr. Shelia Crowe, Professor of Medicine, University of Virginia and author of “Celiac Disease for Dummies”
• Shelley Case, BSc, RD, Registered Dietitian, author, speaker and leading international nutrition expert on Celiac
• Daniel C. Adelman, MD, Senior VP & Chief Medical Officer, Alvine Pharmaceuticals Inc.
• Anne Lee, MSEd, RD, CDN, Registered Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Nutritionist, Schär USA
And back by popular demand: “The Missing Ingredient”, with Frank Baldassare
• In 2009, 180 new GF products came on the market, making it the largest niche in the food industry.
• At the CDF 2009 Conference Betty Crocker launched their new Gluten-Free cake mixes
• Currently Google offers 1,560,000 results for a GF Diet.
