This sounds like a desktop search program was installed. I have Google
Desktop on my system, and it works like this, although I don't think you
have Google Desktop on your system. You might have Microsoft's desktop
search program installed. You might be able to find out by looking at
the system tray or maybe the add/remove programs list. Not sure how
you'd get back to the default search facility, but you may try removing
the desktop search application or changing it's settings. Sorry I wasn't
more helpful, but I hope this gives you some ideas on where to look.
