My hypothyroid symptoms started when I was in 5th grade (ages 10 and 11).
Within a few months I had symptoms of hyperinsulin, too. Hypothyroid finally
diagnosed four years later, but hypoglycemia not diagnosed until I was 24 by
a doctor who didn't believe me until he saw the results. I've managed the
problem since then except when a couple of "bright" doctors who taught at the
local medical school decided to prove something and brought my synthroid
dosage so low that I could not control the hyperinsulin-hypoglycemia and was
a danger to the world every time I drove a car. Exercising even made things
worse -- I was lucky to only break two toes.

The Islets of Langerhans produce the insulin. They can act independently of
other pancreatic cells. The liver is involved in the whole process.

One diabetic endo insisted that one does not become diabetic after being
hyperinsulin/hypoglycemic (the Islets of Langerhans becoming exhausted).
However, I know people who have become diabetic after being
hyperinsulin/hypoglycemic -- the age at which it happens seems to be related
to how well they controlled the problem with diet. They also were
hypothyroid.
