The Gambia-Electricity tariffs
The Gambia reduces electricity tariffs for all consumers
APA-Banjul (The Gambia) The Energy Ministry in Banjul has on Wednesday
announced an unprecedented reduction in electricity tariffs for all
consumers in The Gambia.
According to the announcement, the reduction, which is to take
immediate effect, constitutes a 10 percent reduction in commercial and
industrial tariffs. The tariff for domestic consumers has also been
similarly reduced by 5 percent.
It is to be noted that earlier this month, President Yahya Jammeh
presided over a retreat of ministries and policy makers in his home
village of Kanilai at which a critical review was made of the
government’s Vision 2020 blueprint, to appraise the progress made half
way through its implementation.
One of the factors recognised as a deterrent to the successful
implementation of Vision 2020 and the country’s Poverty Reduction
Strategic Paper is high electricity tariffs.
In Wednesday’s announcement, it was stated that President Jammeh was
the one who gave the directive for the tariff reductions to be
effected.
