This report is based on a research study involving middle school math
students with learning disabilities who are using digital math content. The
pilot study indicates that
this advanced electronic access significantly improves their learning and
their test scores. The article also touches on the larger issue making math
textbooks accessible
to students with print disabilities by publishers using NIMAS plus MathML,
This study is important also for colleges, universities and
businesses. The new MathML language permits much better presentation and
manipulation of math using the
new math computer language. It is also invaluable for people with
disabilities as the new MathML is being integrated into the NIMAS and DAISY
document formats
providing by far the best access to math for people with disabilities than
ever before. This is creating a level playing field in the fields of math
and science which is
increasingly important for taking college and university studies and
opening more contemporary high tech employment.
