I would like to thank everyone who shared their suggestions or experiences
with probitiocs with me. It was very helpful, and I'm keeping this for
future reference. While waiting on all the responses, I went to Fruitful
Yield, and they suggested Pearls, which had a line of different probitiocs
depending on your condition. I'm trying Pearls IC (stands for intensive
care), which has Lactobacillus (acidophilus, rhamnosus) and Bifidobacterium
(bifidum, lactis, longum, breve). It's in 1 billion CFU, and the interesting
thing about it is that it supposedly won't dissolve until it hits the
intestines. One of the problems, apparently, when taking probiotics,
especially in pill form, is that the stomach acid destroys a lot of the good
bacteria before it hits the intestines. This one supposed releases the good
bacteria in the intestines. I tried it yesterday and felt pretty good.
Thanks to one of the posts that says you can take as many as you need.
Again, thank you to all who responded, and I hope this information below is
helpful to others as well.

I've used a lot of them, and I think konjac is the most effective.

It is not a probiotic per se, it is a fiber. But it kills bad bacteria and
encourages the good ones. It also aids digestion of starches (which keeps
the starches from feeding the bad bacteria) and encourages butyrate
production in the lower gut, which is very healing to the gut. Also it is
cheap and very harmless (In Asia they use it to make noodles and have been
eating it for the last 1,000 years or so).

You can buy the powder and mix it with water. I mix it with psyllium and
chia seeds first, to make it dissolve easier. I take about 1/4 tsp. with
each meal, and between meals if I feel like it. You can also buy it in pill
form: it's called PGX and it's sold for weight loss (but it won't cause you
to lose weight unless you typically overeat).

My doctor started me on Align. You can buy it over the counter.

I take Florastor by the handful when I have this issue - saccaromyces
boulardii. I read research which indicated that the two per day or so that
the bottle recommended just doesn't help. So I take 10 or so per day. Dr.
said it doesn't hurt but he didn't suggest it. But, it helps me - either
really works or as a placebo - I don't really care which.

I happen to represent a GF Probiotic that I am using and is working well.
It's is pre-digested, which means that all the nutrients are immediately
absorbed in the body. Click

In the hope to help you.

My nutritionist recommends PB8.

It has been recommend many times by the celiac doctors that Culturelle is
one of the best. You can get it at the drug store.

Hope this helps. I have taken it for years.

Maybe look into Kefir for when they stop?

Our celiac daughter has ulcerative colitis and can sometimes stop a mild
attack with iFLORA available from sedonalabs.com It has a several strains of
good bacteria that others don't which I have read are good for gut healing
-- L Plantarum and L Salivarius. This is grown on milk even though they say
they "wash it"

so bear that in mind. if milk products are an issue.

Megaflora's OLD blend, not the new one with rice bran also worked but not as
strongly. It is supposedly grown on rice starch.

Its maker is MegaFood and it is available at Whole Foods.

In addition to this, something that made a BIG improvement for our daughter
with the bowel overgrowth issue is eating Wills Valley organic UNPASTEURIZED
sauerkraut, available in the fridge at the health food store. It has the
natural bacteria from the pesticide-free cabbage, plus the farm well water
and has made a huge difference in her reflux, indigestion and bowel gas.
She eats some of it every day for maintenance and if she misses a day or two
because we run out, she can tell.

It also helps acidify the gut if you tend to be low in stomach acid which we
have theorized may be the reason for the overgrowth problems. Hers started
after taking 3 different antibiotics in a row for bronchitis -- Augmentin,
Biaxin and then Cipro. The doctor theorized she had "clean gut" and
something not killed by the antibiotics took over, but they are unable to
culture anything. She is negative for CDiff and the usual suspects. I am
thinking maybe a fungus or viral critter. Fish oil capsules have helped
alot (Carlsons's). There is information on ulcerative colitis & bowel
overgrowth on <http://www.mercola.com> www.mercola.com You could look over
there. He sells products too but I dont' know anything about them. The
Rosedale diet he recommends has severe carbohydrate restriction and it has
also benefitted her. She got her singing voice back finally because the
reflux is so diminished. She followed the SCD diet at
<http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info> www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info
for 5 years but Rosedale works even better for her for overgrowth. Each
time you make a change, add a probiotic, start the kraut or restrict carbs
expect alot of gas and a big die-off reaction but the bugs in your gut.

I hope all this stuff makes sense and is helpful.

There is Shaklee Optiflora is a prebiotic and pro-biotic. The pre- is a
powder and the pro is a pearl type pill containing good bacteria that works
to calm and clear the colon. The attached PDF file will give you more
information. Hopefully this will assist you.

I use BioK Plus liquid. It is expensive and has to be refrigerated. I also
have to special order through my health food store. All these seem
negatives but it worked for me when nothing else I tried did. Worth the
expense and the trouble if you need it.

I take Kyolic acidolphilus and it works fine. I get it at the Vitamine
shoppe.

My GI doc put me on VSL#3. it's expensive, but it's the only one that keeps
the overgrowth in check for me.

I've had the same problem since I'm on long-term antibiotics right now for
Lyme disease and can't use the antifungals like Diflucan due to side
effects.

I was using Natren Healthy Trinity which is a great probiotic, but it got
very expensive because we had to boost my intake up to 3 to 4 a day. I now
use Custom Probiotics High Count Multi-Strain Acidophilus and Bifidus Adult
Formula CP-1, three a day.

Something I didn't realize and it also got me in trouble... that one needs
to take more than the recommended dose if on antibiotics for an extended
time or already have a compromised gut like most of us do with CD. You
can't overdose on probiotics, so take as many as you can throughout the day.
Through some trial and error (trying a few other brands), I found that one
that contains high doses of acidophilus and bifidos do the best job of
keeping the overgrowth at bay for me.

I'm also going to experiment with a product called Three-Lac as it seems to
be working for some of my friends in the Lyme support group-- this is just
another probiotic with additional strains. It is available through Kirkman
Labs and they are excellent to deal with, very customer service oriented.

Also, just in case, I follow a strict anti-yeast diet...no sugar, starchy
vegetables, or grains, except for brown rice or whole grain oats a couple
times a week, and only about three servings of hard fruits a week (apples,
pears). It seems to work, but when things get bad I generally just stick to
meat and nonstarchy vegetables for a week or so and that helps immensely.
