Phil,
Look for other open windows on your system, such as messages from your virus
protection software, or from Automatic Updates, or any other programs that
normally run in the background. When programs such as the above want your
attention, they pop up windows that tend to stay on top of everything else,
with the result that they mess up other windows. This may not be what's
happening on your machine, but I have found it to be the case when things
suddenly start behaving strangely for no apparent reason.
