Hi John,
     I am not sure about if the microphone had power to the element before I 
rewired it but I was under the impression that microphones for handy talkies 
didn't actually use that style element. I really don't know.
     The Heil headset still has good audio. its just physically seen better 
days.
     Actually, I am using the Heil adapter to plug the 3.5 MM plug for the 
handy talkie mike in to the Kenwood.
