Gambian president Yaya Jammeh raised the hope of improvised workers by declaring at the end of the new year message that salaries will be raised 20% across the board. This announcement came as a shock to observers as the annual financial budget report delivered by the country's finance minster last month made no mention of this increase.  The nation with 58% living in abject and acute poverty where most families cannot afford basic food and housing, with the price of a cup of sugar at D6. Commentators remarked that with the government expenditure exceeding budgetary limitations, this  promise is just empty, like the president's promise to enforce the letters of law in our country.  Other commentators were concerned that only one public cooperation is expected to pay dividend to its biggest or poorest shareholder, the government in 2010, with the rest, sold to the president and his cronies, making staff redundant and closing training schools. Gambians experienced a high cost of basic secondary education, which is free in all other countries in the whole sub-region costing the entire annual income of most families.
