Quebec husband found not guilty of helping depressed wife commit suicide


A Quebec man was found not guilty Monday of helping his wife commit suicide.
Leger Ayotte was given an unconditional discharge after pleading guilty to a
lesser charge of negligent use of a firearm. The case was heard at the
Trois-Rivières courthouse, 135 kilometres northeast of Montreal. The
69-year-old man was arraigned in May 2009 after his wife, Suzie
Perreault-Ayotte, was found shot to death in their home in Trois-Rivières.
Crown prosecutor Maxime Chevalier indicated the woman was suffering from
depression at the time, while the man had just learned he had cancer. He
said the Crown was not able to prove Ayotte had the intention to help his
wife kill herself and added the couple might have had a suicide pact. In
2008, in a landmark case, another Quebecer, Stephan Dufour, was found not
guilty of helping his disabled uncle commit suicide. Assisted suicide is a
hot topic in Quebec, where Ginette Leblanc, 47, who suffers from amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis, is waging a legal battle to strike down the assisted
suicide law.
