So then we agree: religion can be an obstacle. They have the "word," they now need the school.

There are many, many, many things you have to do when you are counting on deliverance from God. 'Doing nothing' will not get you delivered...which is why so many people do not get their deliverance. God always does His part...people do not want to do their part, so guess what happens?? No deliverance.

> We have a deliverance ministry, John, and guess what? People want deliverance, but they want to be able to do what they want or not do anything and they want God to do it all. It doesn't work that way. Don't get me wrong. God and Jesus will meet you where you are. You don't even have to take a step. You can just fall in their direction and they will be right there, letting you know they are ready, willing, and more than able to help get you out of what you got yourself into, what someone else may have gotten you into, or something that just happened through no fault of your own. But, there are steps, baby steps at first, but still steps that have to be taken before deliverance can happen.

Where is the deliverance, or more importantly, from what are the students I am talking about waiting to be delivered? What about God helping those who help themselves? Waiting for divine intervention becomes one more reason for being inactive, inactivity creates apathy, and apathy self-perpetuates.

I believe that one can easily argue that generations of waiting on God for deliverance from every situation has led to apathy. Surely such total reliance had its place as a comfort when African slaves had absolutely no tools of empowerment other than their bodies, but now, however, far too often I hear on a daily basis from the most at risk of students of how Jesus will take care of every situation. So, say in the case of not passing a test, the excuse is that failure was what Jesus intended. Therefore, ultimately, religion becomes another crutch; another of the myriad means of shifting personal responsibility.
