I'm not sure about other email programs, but Thunderbird will go out and
automatically detect the email settings you should be using for your
email provider. This has worked with me for both Gmail and my company's
email system. You just type in your email address and Thunderbird will
do the rest. You'll have the opportunity to check those settings and
manually setup your account if you want. You can obviously also go in
later and change anything you want.
