I have JFW 9, but I think this has been around.

1.  Hit Jaws key plus F2 and open the configuration manager.

2.  Use Alt plus S to activate the user settings  menu


3.  Hit t to get to the text processing menu

4.  Tab about 7 times to get to Spell AlphaNumeric Data and press down
arrow to pick spell or spell phonetically

5. remember to hit control s to save the changed settings


6.  Close  configuration manager with Alt plus F4
 

The changed settings will only affect the application - email or
whatever was active when you started the manager.  

If you want to make the setting global, you should type control plus
shift plus d 
After step 1 above.
