What I've realized from reading all of your responses is that I need to
adjust some settings either in IE8 or Adobe Reader to access the URL, but
I'm not sure which. When I enter on a link that is a PDF document, like the
knitting pattern, the file opens in Adobe Reader, so pressing F6, pressing
alt+D, and checking the file properties--all of the standard
solutions--don't work.

What settings do I need to adjust to open the file in IE8 so as to access
the URL? I've poked around and haven't found anything that seems promising.

The other thing I realized is that I didn't mention I'm using

www.google.com/ie

which has no clutter at all. since some of the clutter is useful, like the
web addresses, I'm paying a price for the nice and tidy website.

what I learned last night is that, if I tab to a result link, I can get the
URL by pressing the context key followed by the letter _R, the accelerator
key for Properties. Properties doesn't show up as an option if I arrow to
the link, and pressing alt+enter while on the link doesn't work either.

so many things to learn.
