In later models of the THF6A, Kenwood added a menu item, #31, which
turns off the charger circuit when using alkaline cells, or when
running from a 12 volt source in a situation where you don't also want
to charge the battery.
The reset menu #30 is the last option on the older models.
I'm not sure when that change was made, but it was on the unit which I
bought 3 years ago, and not on the first one I bought in 2002.
