AM stereo might have survived had the FCC endorsed a standard there were 
three standards at the time but the FCC left the decision of which standard 
to adopt to the manufacturers and I think AM stereo died for that reason.

In my opinion a more technically correct name should be ibac (in band
adjacent channels).  It'll go the way of am stereo in the 80's.
