Hi Danny,

You think that one was bad: read on.

Two years ago, when the Democratic Party retook the congress, a number of
amateur radio lists--appealing to the overwhelmingly white and upper middle
class Republican conservative nature of the amateur radio hobby in the
United States, sent out an e-mail that stated roughly that Nancy & company
in the new congress were going to charge a fee for the usage of every
amateur frequency (I believe it was 2 kHz on HF and 5 kHz) on the amateur
bands.

Many people believed it and began firing off angry e-mails to congress and
the local and national media. Just how someone could believe that, I don't
know, but it did cause a minor rhubarb 2 years ago.

(But in new York State where I live--after the latest budget--one can wonder
<great big laugh>!)

Subject: [W4OVH] Bad April Fools Joke

 From the League:

It was a bad April Fool joke. I did not want to put out an announcement
on this here because I did not want to elevate it in any way. But a few
too many people have asked if it was true (it's NOT) - and some have
gotten themselves all worked up. So.

Radiobanter.com website seems to have been the first place where someone
posted an announcement that began with:

"San Luis Obispo county supervisors took drastic and unprecedented action
yesterday by passing an ordinance that would prohibit amateur radio
operators, known as "hams", from operating their transmitting stations.
The measure was put in place to eliminate what officials said were
health risks associated with transmitters located close to children."

It is NOT true. Not only that, the newspaper cited in the article is
looking at taking legal action against the author and the county
officials are not amused by it. Too many hams are overreacting without
thinking or checking and it is causing troubles. The website pulled the
listing, but now ham related email reflectors are passing it on.

If you hear about this - kill the rumors. It was only a bad April Fool
joke.
