I wrote back in May about how I've been on a strict GF diet for 7 years (diagnosed with CD 7 years ago), but out of nowhere I was miserable -- bloated all the time; diarrhea (or a loose stool) after eating nothing but GF food; hadn't had a normal bowel movement in about a month.
This continued for 5 months, until last week. Now it's done.
In the past 5 months I went to Dr. Fasano and got my blood looked at, I had an MRI, I had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy. None showed any problem.
My conclusion: The problem was Vitamin D.
Here's my history so others who are in a similar situation can compare.
I have osteoporosis. I was taking a drug (Forteo) that builds bone and I started having terrible muscle pain. The doctor checked my Vitamin D level and said it was very, very low. He put me on 49,000 IU/week of Vitamin D. When I started taking the D, I got very constipated. Someone on this list suggested I take it on a full stomach. I did. The constipation went away and so did the muscle pain.
After about a month, my digestive problems started.
I took the D until the doctor told me that my level was "low-normal." Then I cut back and eventually stopped.
When I stopped, my digestive problems got somewhat better, but not entirely (principal problem: stools floated, rather than sunk).
When I went to Dr. Fasano, he told me that my blood showed negative for Celiac Disease and that my Vitamin D levels were very low. So I started taking D again.
The digestive problems came back; really bad. I went for the MRI, and then had stool samples, the endoscopy and colonoscopy and when they all came back negative I was perplexed. I thought: Let me start taking probiotic and L-glutamine because that's worked in the past. My stools were still loose, but they sank. So I thought: Now let's try going off the Vitamin D. I did and for the past 4 days I've been totally normal.
Of course I don't know what to do once my Vitamin D levels go down again, but at least I'm feeling better right now.
