The main reason for the size of the players is the obvious large speaker and
the battery. The built-in speaker is extremely good and so is the battery.
During prototype testing, I got as much as 45 hours of life out of the
battery. And, it is the best mono speaker I have seen on a device. If you
look at the actual size, I would compare it to a large hard-paper book.

Tfwo of us received the new NLS players and cartridges, and indeed they are
easy to operate and sound great. We certainly noticed that they are larger
than we had expected. I am sure an NLS representative would be able to
explain the testing and evaluation, but my guess is that the sturdiness of
the player5, and the big buttons with plenty of space and braille labels,
won the day. Many patrons probably have difficulty distinguishing buttons,
and although there is a built-in feature of the player that allows someone
to use a remote control, this way it may not be necessary to do so.
In future, I speculate that a smaller version might be available for
purchase, just as smaller cassette players have been, and of course we
already have professional machines capable of playing the NLS books and much
more besides. But NLS needed to decide what machine would do the most good
for the greatest number.
So, although we might enjoy a smaller player, we will probably all be happy
enough with this one and the advanced version for those who desire it--more
buttons, more navigation choices. My mom is already marveling that she no
longer has to turn over the book, look for other tapes, or replay muffled
segments! Cheers!
