Most virus checkers do an initial system scan when the
system is first powered up. I'd say that was most likely
what's happening here.

Subject: [VICUG-L] AVG working, but doing a strange thing
when computer starts
Hi everyone, I have been using AVG 8 for a week now and like
it, but I
have noticed that when I first turn on my computer it is
slow, and after a
few minutes I'll hear the little click like IE makes when it
goes to a new
page, and then it speeds back up. Anyone know what this is?
I've double
checked to see and make sure that AVG is running and I only
have the
applications opened I'm using.
