1877 - Meta Vaux Warwick (later Fuller) is born in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. She will become a sculptor who will train at
the Pennsylvania Museum and School for Industrial Arts and
travel to Paris to study with Auguste Rodin. Her sculptures
will be exhibited at the salon in Paris as well as extensively
in the U.S. for 60 years. Her most famous works will include
"Ethiopia Awakening," "Mary Turner (A Silent Protest Against
Mob Violence)," and "The Talking Skull." She will join the
ancestors on March 18, 1968.
1934 - Jack Leroy "Jackie" Wilson, entertainer who will be known as "Mr.
Excitement," is born in Detroit, Michigan. He will be important
in the transition of Rhythm and Blues into Soul. He will be
considered a master showman, and one of the most dynamic and
influential singers and performers in R&B and Rock n' Roll
history. Gaining fame in his early years as a member of the R&B
vocal group Billy Ward and His Dominoes, he will go solo in 1957
and record over 50 hit singles that span R&B, pop, soul, doo-wop
and easy listening. During a 1975 benefit concert, he will
collapse on stage from a heart attack and subsequently fall into
a coma that persists for nearly nine years until he joins the
ancestors on January 21, 1984, at the age of 49. By this time,
he will be one of the most influential artists of his generation.
A two-time Grammy Hall of Fame Inductee, he will be inducted in
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. In 2004, Rolling Stone
magazine will rank him #69 on their list of the 100 Greatest
Artists of All Time.
1957 - Thomas Dexter Jakes Sr. is born in South Charleston, West Virginia.
He will be known as T. D. Jakes, a pastor, author and filmmaker. He
will be the pastor of The Potter's House, a non-denominational
megachurch. His church services and evangelistic sermons will be
broadcast on The Potter's Touch, which will air on Lightsource.com,
the Trinity Broadcasting Network, Black Entertainment Television,
the Daystar Television Network and The Word Network. Other aspects
of his ministry will include the annual festival MegaFest, which
will draw more than 300,000 people, the annual women's conference
Woman Thou Art Loosed, and gospel music recordings. He will host the
T.D. Jakes Show, a nationally syndicated talk show produced by Tegna
Media and distributed by NBC, until the show's cancellation in March
2017.
1948 - Oliver W. Hill becomes the first African American to be
elected to the Richmond, Virginia City Council.
1963 - Fannie Lou Hamer and five other voter registration workers
were arrested in Winona, Mississippi on their way home from
a workshop in Charleston, SC. They were held in the Winona
jail for four days, during which they were severely beaten
with nightsticks and fists by policemen, and with leather
straps by prison trustees under the direction of police
officers.
1966 - Tamela Jean Johnson (later Mann) is born in Fort Worth, Texas.
She will become a gospel singer, and actress. She will begin her
career as a singer with the gospel group Kirk Franklin and the
Family. She will be a featured soloist on several tracks while
with Franklin's group, including "Don't Take Your Joy Away", "Now
Behold the Lamb", and "Lean on Me", the latter of which will also
include Mary J. Blige, Crystal Lewis, R. Kelly, and Bono. She will
release her debut studio album in 2005. Her third studio album,
"Best Days" will be certified Gold by the RIAA, and lead single
"Take Me to the King" will be a huge commercial success, and will
receive a Grammy Award for Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music
Performance nomination. She will be known for her role as Cora
Simmons in Tyler Perry's plays, including "I Can Do Bad All By
Myself," "Diary of a Mad Black Woman," "Madea's Family Reunion,"
"Madea's Class Reunion," "Meet the Browns," and "What's Done in the
Dark." She will appear in movies including "Diary of a Mad Black
Woman" and "Madea's Big Happy Family." She will record some songs on
the soundtrack for "Diary of a Mad Black Woman," including
participating in the song "Father (Can You Hear Me)". She will be
married to David Mann. They will star on the TBS sitcom "Meet the
Browns" from 2009 to 2011. In 2015, they will begin starring on the
Bounce TV sitcom "Mann & Wife."
1978 - Larry Holmes wins the WBC heavyweight title by defeating Ken
Norton in Las Vegas, Nevada
1980 - Comedian Richard Pryor suffers almost fatal burns at his San
Fernando Valley, California home, when a mixture of "free-
base" cocaine explodes.
1983 - Scott Joplin, noted jazz musician and composer of ragtime
music, is the sixth African-American depicted in the U.S.
Postal Service's Black Heritage USA commemorative series of
postage stamps.
1989 - Logan Laurice Browning is born in Atlanta, Georgia. She will
become an actress. She will make her acting debut in the teen series
"Summerland" as the character Carrie, and will play Vanessa in the
Nickelodeon series "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide" in
2005–06. She will also appear as the main love interest in Dijon
Talton's video for the song "Wild Out'" In 2007, she will stard as
one of the main characters, Sasha, in the live-action theatrical
feature "Bratz: The Movie," based on the popular fashion doll line.
She will join the cast of "Meet the Browns" during the second season,
replacing Brianne Gould as the character Brianna Ortiz. She will make
a brief appearance in Prima J's "Rockstar" music video, as well as
B5's music video "U Got Me". She will have a recurring role on the
Disney XD series "Pair of Kings." She will appear in two episodes of
"The Secret Circle," a TV series based on the novels of the same name
by L.J. Smith. In April 2012, she will be cast as Jelena Howard in
VH1's "Hit the Floor." Before "Hit the Floor", she will not be a
professional dancer. She will be cast for her acting ability and will
train for 8 months prior to the series filming. She will star alongside
her "Hit the Floor" co-star, Katherine Bailess, in the YouTube comedic
series "Shit Southern Women Say." In July 2016, it will be announced
that she will star in the role of Samantha White in the Netflix
satirical-drama series "Dear White People." In 2017, she will be cast
in the role of Lizzie on the Netflix horror film, "The Perfection." The
film will be released on May 24, 2019.
1989 - Dan Clermont is born in Lynn, Massachusetts. He will become a
lead guitarist and backing vocalist for the Florida-based pop
punk band "Set It Off." The group's first two studio albums
will chart in the Billboard Top 200. He will meet lead singer
Cody Carson in high school. He, Cody, Zach DeWall, and Austin
Kerr will join the band when it is formed in 2008. He will
perform alongside Maxx Danzinger in "Set It Off."
1998 - Three white men are charged in Jasper, Texas, with the brutal
dragging death of James Byrd Jr., an African American.
1998 - Artist Lois Mailou Jones joins the ancestors in Washington,
DC.
1998 - Pryce Watkins is born in Atlanta, Georgia. He will become a Rhythm
& Blues artist and rapper. He will get his start as a member of
"History in the Making" together with Jawan Harris and Dylan Allen.
Their most popular songs are “T.G.I.F.” and “Walk Away.” After
several years of performing with his teammates, he will release his
first solo mixtape where Jawan Harris’ voice will appear. In total,
he will hone his craft since 2010.
