Hi;
Thanks for all the good ideas.  Unfortunately I had checked both the volume and synthesizer.  I eventually took the leap and uninstalled and reinstalled the program.  I have to play with a few settings but its working fine.  I guess if one has another old screen reader its sometimes handy to keep it around.
