might want to check further but when I renewed there was a processing fee.  13 dollars through 
FCC ULS

You still have that 2 year grace period yes, but you can't operate in that 2
years until you renew your license so your best bet is to check and renew if
the date is close. There should be no fee to renew unless you have a vanity
call. You can waste your money with the w5yi group or some other group like
that who'll gladly take your money for something you can do yourself free,
but that's my thoughts on it, I'd never pay them for that since it can be
done very easily online or probably many other ways.
