Hi Bill;

It sounds to me as though your handset is not connecting with the base.

I've had that happen to me a couple of times.

I would just put the phone back on the base for a few seconds and that would 
be the end of it.

Are your other phones in the house working ok?

Are they corded?

If so then I don't believe it is a wiring problem.
