Assalaamu alaikum all you football fans out there,
Alhamdulillah I am enjoying this thread so much because of my love of the
game. I can't recount how many times I 'nyaye fence' as a poor student to
see some of those great names you mentioned slug it out at Box Bar.
My beef with you all is that none of you have paid tribute so far (or did I
overlook) to Nyanga Sallah (may Allah have mercy on him), who died
tragically in the July '81 coup. I was a Banjul Central guy who was always
fascinated by the Banjul South team which had him and Birri Njie among other
notables. Boy, those Ndongo Afdai, who wouldn't love their game. His image
is still vivid in my mind in one of their matches against Goal Keeper Saho's
Serrekunda 'duto' side. Remember the battle cry, Serrekunda 'duto', 'amba'
Bakau 'chaalo', Banjul 'nenningunja':) O, nostalgia!!!!
Baboucarr, I like your selection. How about Gambian footballer of the
century. My 100% vote goes to my Gambian football idol of all times, Alagie
Birri Njie. Thank you Biri-Biri, 'Pele de Gambia' for all those entertaining
moments of soccer.
Adou Sey, thanks for paying tribute to my star and personal friend, Star
Janneh, who is incidentally subscribed to this forum and I hope he will drop
a comment if he is not too hungry from fasting:) So long and Ramadhan
Mubarak.
Allahumma salli wasallim alaa Nabiyyina Muhammad. Wasalaam.
Modou Mbye
