Associated Press - Washington, DC:

The FCC announced today it will grandfather all past and present citizens
band license holders into fully-privileged Amateur Extra Class licenses.
This
is to comply with recent Washington budget cuts and the paperwork reduction
act.

In addition, all existing amateur radio operators will be issued 27 mhz
police endorsements to help the new recruits transition to the ham bands.
The
ARRL praised this new rulemaking plan and predicted its membership to swell
by at least one million new hams.  They went on to say, "There's a new
sheriff
in town on 27 mhz."

The new "CB hams" will be able to use the call letters of their choice, as
long as they begin with an A, K, N, or W. The FCC suggested using a USA
prefix
and their old CB call letters, such as: "W1-KMA3096"  or a famliar phrase
like,   "K1 MAWN"

Officials at S9 Magazine were not available for comment.

A quick tuning of the CB channels showed much excited activity and
preparation.  Comments heard were, "Where the hell is them ham channels on
my radidio?"
  And,  "Hey, my Moonraker gots lots of swrs on 80 meter."
