Well, I did something similar.  In those days I had a national ncx 200, 
kindof the five band version of the nc3.  All I had for knowing where I 
was was an old tube 100 kc xtal calibrator.  I would just go to the gop of 
the band, as far as the knob would turn and count markers and turns of the 
knob.  Well, I decided to call cq one afternoon. I called and called, no 
answer. I thought, boy the band is sure quiet, so I rechecked where I was 
and I was clear down in the cw band, a hundred kc below the phone band.  I 
dreaded getting the mail for weeks.
