FYI: here is the letter I sent to Amazon in case you want to pile on.

Dear Amazon:

As my organization, Sun Sounds of Arizona, is in the business of making
printed information accessible for print-disabled people, we were very
excited to hear the Kindle 2 would have text to speech capability. We are,
therefore, very disappointed to discover that the speech output only applies
to the TTS, not to any of the controls. What makes this really unkind is
the fact that simple inexpensive chip sets exist off the shelf which could
have made this unit fully accessible, rather than just a toy for bored
sighted people who have money to waste. TTS is far more expensive than
limited vocabulary chips sets designed to handle the menus and so forth. So
to add one, and skip the other is inexcusable. Making this unit accessible
to blind people, people with low vision, people who are older or have palsy
making holding or looking at visual displays difficult or fatiguing, not to
mention people driving or working in the kitchen who want to "read", is
readily achievable.

I sincerely hope Amazon reviews this blind spot in its thinking and makes
the Kindle live up to its name.
