My original email dealt with the lengthy time it was taking me to recover from diarrhea after a stomach virus compared to other family members who didn’t have celiac disease.

I had more than 20 replies.  The consensus was that it does seem to take us longer to recover.  Most suggested the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, and gluten-free toast) and Gatorade and eating small quantities of these often.  The first 24 hours, just drink clear liquids, and then begin the BRAT diet the next day.  The important thing is to stay hydrated.  After stools start to form, broiled chicken or turkey could be introduced.

Some mentioned taking Imodium; several suggested probiotics.  One person who had explosive diarrhea for three weeks was put on prednisone tablets which were helping.   Another’s explosive diarrhea ended up being microscopic colitis, and she was put on Asacol for a month.  Several suggested that I call my doctor.

Some alternative suggestions were the spice turmeric (a tablespoon to a cup of warm water), acupuncture, grape seed extract,  Emergen-C, VERATRUM ALB, and hot lemon water, etc.

Thanks to all who replied, and if anyone needs the details from all the emails, please let me know, and I can send you an attachment.

I have been eating the BRAT diet, drinking Gatorade, taking probiotics and Imodium, and I am feeling much better, and have been almost two days without diarrhea.  I became sick on Tuesday night and had watery diarrhea until Sunday night.  Now the challenge will be to reintroduce other foods.  I appreciate all the kind thoughts and suggestions. - Shirley
