Hello Malanding,
I believe polygamy applies to only Muslims under the Mohammedan
Marriage Act, in the Gambia and even them can opt out of the freedom
to marry more than one wife to the maximum of 4, by marrying at the
registry, or the AG's chambers, until Sir Dawda Jawara wanted to marry
another and changed the law so that only Muslims can marry two wives
or more even if they have married in the registry first. Whether its a
fair law or not or even constitutionally correct is left to
interpretations and a challenge in a court of law. May be this case
will bring that issue back to the fore front of our legal debate.

A British national was on Monday arraigned at the Brikama Magistrates
Court to face a charge of bigamy, contrary to Section 154 of the
Criminal Code, Cap 10 Volume III, laws of The Gambia.
Steve Barley Baugttan, a resident at Gunjur Village in Kombo South,
Western Region, is alleged to have unlawfully married one Mariama
Manga,
alias Sibi, a Gambian when he is legally married to his wife Lorraine
Bailey-Vaughan. The unlawful marriage is said to have taken place in
the
months of May and June, last year.
Mr Baugttan, who appeared before Senior Magistrate EF M'Bai, has
repeatedly denied the charge levelled against him.
The case was initially heard before Principal Magistrate BY Camara of
the Banjul Magistrates Court, before it was transferred to Brikama for
lack of jurisdiction to try the case.
Police prosecutor, Sub-Inspector Saine, represented the IGP in the
criminal trial, which was later adjourned for continuation.
