ORIGINAL POST: My daughter who is 19 and been diagnosed with celiac disease for nearly one year and has maintained a gluten free diet since then accidently ingested gluten. We would like to know the best and fastest remedy to heal from her current stomach cramps and runny stools.

**************************************************************************************************************************************

I received many responses...Thanks! We decided to try a probiotic (Culturelle, available in most drug stores) and L-Glutamine, which I purchased at Vitamin World. My daughter also ate a bland diet, drank plenty of water, and tried to limit her dairy. She was quite ill for about 3-4 days, but did seem to feel a little better after starting the Culturelle and L-Glutamine. I am listing my summary of responses:

*Basically, it will have to run its course. Best not to take any anti-diarrhea medications so that she will past the offending foods quicker. Make sure that she stays hydrated with plenty of liquids such as clear juices, water, chicken broth, and for myself, ginger ale seems to help with the achy gut pains. It should be better after a day, but if not, she should consult her doctor in case it was something else like food poisoning.

*When the diarrhea is real bad, I have to take lomotil. If I have cramps, I take pepto. Drink a lot and try to get it out of her system. It takes me at least 4 days to get feeling better. If she has a lot of bloating and gas, try gas x generic from walmart, eat lightly, bananas, tea, rice, hot brown rice cereal, homemade chicken soup is a great healer as well as mashed potato or baked potato, rice pasta and chicken, or fish for protein.

*I find that water fasting for 3 days always does the trick. it reduces
the inflammation very quickly

*I don't know that there is any. The body needs to rid itself of the gluten.
The sooner the better.

*I was diagnosed almost twenty years ago. My md, who was vp of the world
homeopathic assoc told me to take the homeopathic remedy VERATRUM ALB 30C..2
pills under the tongue as needed. IT REVERSES ALL GLUTEN REACTIONS WITHIN
A FEW MIN. If you take it at the first gurgle, then nothing else happens

*The stomach pain and runny stools should be gone with no
gluten ingestion. I am attaching a protocol for leaky gut which even though
you do not state these symptoms the L-glutamine has been a life saver for me
in healing my very damaged intestine (I had episodes of intestinal
hemorrhaging). It also aids in general repair of the mucous membrane.

*The best way I have found is Imodium AD (not the advanced) and stop the
dairy. The healing takes time but this will make it more comfortable.

*A good way to recover from accidentally being glutened that I have discovered works for me is to make a tea using freshly squeezed gingerroot juice and hot water. Sweeten with a little honey or whatever you like, sip slowly. This soothes the digestive tract. Ginger is also a natural pain reliever. The other is to make a simple Tapioca pudding using fruit juice rather than milk. It also soothes the tummy. Your daughter can also take a teaspoonful of Tapioca and add it to a glass of water and drink that down. I don't like this one as it tastes more like medicine, but it does help.

*fiber, B12, L Glutamine, water.

*I find that two capsules of activated charcoal can really help.

*Bentonite clay. You can also take it with "iffy" meals, about 1/4 tsp.
I use Pascalite, but I'd expect other brands work too.Otherwise, Pepto Bismol works, and it's easy to find!

*When I get "poisoned" (as my son calls it). I used Specific Carbohydrate Diet, including yogurt.
http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/ In fact I feel best using this diet.

*As soon as you start to feel this way take Benadryl (generic is fine--diphe=
ndramine hydrochloride).=A0 It will relax the smooth muscle lining of the i=

ntestines in addition to supporting your body from the immune histamine res=

ponse.=A0 Also, pre-eating anything new, 1/2 to 1 hour before eating take d=

iphendramine pill and it will protect you from suffering all the bloating, =

etc.=A0 You will pass gas, but that will bring considerable relief.=A0 It m=

ay make you drowsy so try taking a sublingual B12 at the same time.=A0 It w=

orks for me.

*I'd suggest AlkaSelzer Gold - usually available at CVS, but sometimes hard
to find.

*as far as I know you need to let it runs its course? maybe stay away from high fiber foods. Stick with the brat diet:

 bananas, rice, applesauce and toast?

*If she can take dairy, I use Kefir. It's a probiotic drink fround in the
grocery stores by the milk and yogurt. It's really thick, so I have a bowl
of gf cereal and about 1 cup of Kefir before I go to bed. I found the
raspberry flavor the best.
I also read on this list some time ago, someone said to eat a lot of corn,
it seems to clean out the intestines.

* Please remember some posters may be WHEAT-FREE, but not GLUTEN-FREE *
