Scientists at the Medical College of Georgia have received a two-year grant
from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to use
human brain slices to study the effects of candidate compounds as stroke
therapies ? an approach that the researchers believe can serve as an
important intermediate step between animal studies and human clinical
trials.

Patients who suffer a stroke that involves bleeding between the surface of
the brain and the brain tissue have a better chance of survival and reduced
disability if they are treated within 24-hours and at a hospital that
handles many brain-attack emergencies, according to updated guidelines from
the American Heart Association, published today in Stroke: Journal of the
American Heart Association.

The U.S. researchers who linked higher risks of stroke to sleep apnea are
finding the reasons why. Dr. Vahid Mohsenin of the Yale University School of
Medicine in New Haven, Conn., and colleagues say that untreated sleep apnea
eventually harms the brain's ability to modulate blood pressure changes and
prevent damage to itself.
