According to the contractor who just completed the portico, "Brazilian Oil Finish". I would continue with this if the consensus is positive but they need to be revarnished after less than 3 months. It could be that he only applied one coat.

Regular varnishing. I don't think there's an alternative, which is why paint
is better on exterior woodwork than clear coat finishes.
