I have had two G5RV antennas over the years. The standard
one a guy just gave me. What is that shorter one? 51 feet either
side of center? So it wasn't the larger G5RV. The second one I
bought years later than the first and added 20 extra feet to the
legs in hopes it would tune better on 160 meters. It did. It
also tuned way better at the bottom of 80 meter CW. However, I
found it became more and more directional, due to multiple wave
lengths the higher in frequency I went, and by the time I hit 10
meters, it really wasn't that good of a performer. That was back
when band conditions were great, too. I always had to use a
tuner, however, and I only used it because it was a good all band
all purpose antenna. My R7 multiple band vertical works better
than the G5RV which had an apex of 50 feet back in those days on
my tower. At least that's my opinion based upon many years using
the different antennas.
Phil.
