Hi Ken,

Most of the people who work in Washington live in the burbs - and we
have a lovely mass transit system in Northern Virginia and DC - no clue
about MD. And tons of people do commute that way. However if you live a
time critical life - example I have two jobs - and do them both on
Mon-Thurs, plus help my Mom out - the time involved in public transport
is means it doesn't work for you.

Here at Synectics - we have people who drive to work (we are located in
Rosslyn directly across from Key bridge) from Baltimore - some of them
take the MARC train and then the subway. Others live in the hindterlands
of Va, where they find they must drive. Another thing we have here is
calling slugging - were you wait at a sign and a driver going your way
that has space stops and picks you up. Plus we have private van
companies that do van pools.

By the way the suburb of Fairfax has roughly a million people, and I
think Arlington is heading to the million mark also. The mass transit
system is the subway ( which doesn't just run in the city but comes out
into the burbs) and Metro buses - then Fairfax has the connector buses,
Arlington has ART buses and Alexandria has DASH buses - don't know what
Herndon, Oakton or the other more distance burbs have. And our buses are
changing over to gas - so they are more green friendly. You would not
believe the number of buses here. Even places like Georgetown University
have buses that run, Children's Hospital has a shuttle from the nearest
metro stop. With enough time you can get around here without a car. I
never drove until I had to be able to leave at the drop of a hat to be
there for Amber in the event she had a problem or therapy.

House prices drove people to live further and further out, and then it's
not so convenient for them - I live in Alexandria and can walk to
everything because I am surrounded by shopping centers. But I drive
because how do I carry the stuff back? Pre Fibro-Myalgia - I certainly
did more stuff like that.
