Sahlins in his "Notes on the Original Affluent Society," speaks of  
the "paleolithic rhythm" in which "men commonly hunt from one to four  
nonconsecutive days a week with intervening days of rest and women  
routinely gather every two to three days....  He goes on to say:  
"Overall, the paleolithic rhythm involves days of fairly intense  
physical exertion which alternate with days of rest and light activity."
