After my recent problem, I called the Mars Co. about M&M's this week and was assured that M&M's plain and peanut are GF. I asked if they had changed any of their ingredients or maybe there was a mistake made. He again assured me that there was no accident in making them or that they had changed anything. The M&M's are still GF. The good news also, is that they are very aware of gluten problems and include gluten in their message on allergens.
I was eating them every day and when the problem started I elimated everything, except my own GF cooking. When I started feeling better I had my normal GF meals then had some M&M's after dinner and almost immediately got the pain in my stomach. I am going to wait a while till my system settles down and then try them again. I will post the result of that test.
Someone had asked me if I had a sensitivity to dyes, I sure hope not, but I guess some people do and there are dyes in the M&M's.
Below is my summary of all the messages that were sent through the List, thank you all of much. I don't know what I would do without this list! Linda in Pa.
I called recently and they are gf and supposedly all run on a dedicated line.
My daughter had some the other day and had very bad symptoms as well! We were wondering if it was the M&M's or something else she ate!
The last 2 times we ate M&M's, we also had 'classic' reactions. I called
the company and they state it is GF----but our reactions don't lie. There
is some sort of misunderstanding or miscommunication along the lines at the
Mars company. I would call them and be very specific about your classic
reaction. The only way they will become more transparent and change is by
us! In fact, we thought Butterfingers were GF too---but our kids had the
MOST horrendous reactions the last time! Pretty scary! We are staying away from candy these days.
Not about M&Ms but I have had the classic gluten symptoms that last two days. They only things I have had to eat have been things I made at home. Could it be something going around.?
Did you have the ones with crispy rice in them? I believe those are the
only ones that aren't GF.
If I were you I would call them. And, please let us know (and if they say they added gluten, please let us all know because that would be a huge disappointment). Another idea is to write Lani Thompson of Clan Thompson and she will research it and update their database -- I'm not at home now to look it up there.)Yikes -- I would hate to have M & Ms go away
I just talked to the company Friday and the person I talked to told me
all the M&M's are gluten free.
My daughter with Celiac cannot eat them either. Either there are bad batches that come out or it is something else like the dyes.
Probably cross contamination in production. I eat the peanut ones with no problem.
I don't know if they have changed, but I have never had a reaction to them, even when I binge!
Maybe it was something else? Good luck.
We have no problems with M&M's here in our house. My daughter and her dad
eat them often.
I find that I am reactive (DH) to m and m's and m and m's peanut.
This is interesting. I seem to have an extremely high sensitivity to
gluten, and the past week have been eating peanut M&M's and dark
chocolate peanut M&M's and have not had a reaction. A couple of weeks
ago I also ate a lot of plain M&M's--easter color blend--and I had no
symptoms. They always seem to be safe for me. Could it have been
something else?? Odd. Please let me know (or summarize) if you find
anything out. I'm not sure about how M&M's defines GF, but when I spoke
with Hershey's a few weeks ago, they have a process whereby they make
sure there is no cross-contamination possible even in the factories
where they purchase their raw ingredients. This has greatly decreased
the number of products on their list (to about 9, last time I checked).
But I wonder if maybe M&M's is not as strict.
I had some plain M & M's this past weekend and didn't have any trouble at all. If you do hear of trouble, will you summarize on the post please?
