Hi everyone,

There was a post recently regarding plain enriched white rice and the possibility that not all brands are gluten free. Hopefully the following information is useful to you.

Vitamin and mineral blends used for enrichment purposes may contain starch as a carrier and the source of this starch may be wheat. However, I have come across only one product where wheat starch was used as a carrier and this was a wheat-based pasta product. If indeed the carrier in an enrichment blend contained wheat protein, wheat would have to be included on the food label.

In general, carriers in enrichment blends are considered incidental additives and as such do not have to be declared in the ingredient list. However, if the carrier in an enrichment blend contains wheat protein, under FALCPA it is no longer considered an incidental additive and as such must be declared on the food label.

So, if you don't see the word wheat in the ingredient list or Contains statement of a product containing an enrichment blend, the product does not contain wheat protein.

Hope this helps!
