You'll probably have a slightly smaller learning curve jumping from 
Windows XP to Windows 7, but if you're buying a new computer, it'll 
probably be easier to find a good deal on one running Windows 8 than 
windows 7. If it were me, I'd go with Windows 8 on a new system. If 
you're just upgrading the OS on your existing system then I might 
consider Windows 7 instead.

I'm not sure what you're asking about regarding the laptop. Are you set 
on a Windows laptop? Any particular requirements for your son's laptop? 
Is he blind? I'd just get a solid basic laptop for a son of mine that 
age, unless of course they're into gaming. I think Asus builds a good 
product for the money. You also now have these tablet/laptop 
convertibles, which is what I'm interested in myself, but I'm not sure 
that's what you want for a 12 year old boy.
