Hmm, if you used Office products, the easiest way to convert an XLS file to 
.doc or .rtf is to try opening the Excel file in Word. I don't remember if 
this happens automatically or if the computer prompts you to download a 
plugin the first time you try it, but once the plugin is set up, the XLS 
file opens as a table in Word.

If you try something like this, you should make a copy of the original file 
before proceeding because the file becomes a Word file and cannot be 
reopened in Excel.
