Thanks, all, for your help. there's something very reassuring about knowing
that Mac and Windows share a mythology.

a pc. now, having said this, some older macs don't recover well from forced
shutdowns and it's not a good idea in any event to force shutdown too often.
You should restart your mac at least once a week though because this process
cleans it up and a lot happens when it is running. so, if you want to sleep
it, that's fine, but remember to cycle it at least once a week.
