The goal of DSB's VR Field Services is to assist in the stable
employment of Blind, Deaf Blind and Low Vision clients, many of 
whom
have multiple disabling conditions.

The role of Assisting Technology Specialist is vital to this 
vocational
rehabilitation process by identifying appropriate and effective 
tools to
make job tasks accessible for Blind, Deaf Blind and Low Vision
individuals.  AT Specialists open up job opportunities by testing 
and
configuring adaptive softwares for compatibility, and by working 
with a
client and employer to develop accessible work processes and
environments.  AT Specialists ensure clients are job ready by 
providing
for training of adaptive technologies for efficient access of 
print and
computer data and work tasks.

Assistive Technology includes specialized hardware and software 
that
enables blind or visually impaired individuals to access computer 
data
or print materials.  The AT Specialist provides direct AT 
services to
participants that includes orientation to adaptive technologies,
procurement of training, and conducts onsite job accommodation 
analyses
and recommendations.  AT might include speech input/output, 
screen
magnification, Braille devices & note takers, video magnifiers, 
as well
as standard computer hardware and peripherals.  Environmental 
factors
such as lighting, ergonomics and work-flow are also a vital part 
of the
AT assessment.  The emphasis is to maximize efficiency, accuracy, 
and
long-term safety in job tasks to ensure that the participant has 
the
skills and tools to attain/retain his or her job.

 Duties:

Provide client orientation to adaptive technologies:

*	Educate clients to array of adaptive tools and techniques 
that
allow for optimal access to print media, computer data, essential 
job
tasks and/or access needs as a student.  Conduct onsite 
accommodation
analyses for a specific job, a general job class, or other onsite
technical needs.

Provide recommendations for accommodation:

*	Analyze essential job task requirements as based on business
needs, and collaborate to develop feasible alternative solutions 
for
accommodations.
*	Determine technology requirements and user access needs;
install, test, maintain, and troubleshoot hardware and software 
to
interface AT products with multiple applications and/or 
environments.
Make recommendations for equipment and modifications to the work
environment, with consideration given to contextualizing ADA and 
VR
agency scope in accommodation process.
*	Develop and customize configurations for complex 
applications
directly, as collaborative team, or as outsourced service.
*	Resolve complex multiple product problems; resolve major
conflicts caused by new software versionality, assists others in
de-bugging problems with vendor products; develop work-arounds; 
consult
with senior technical staff to resolve complex technical 
problems.
*	Analysis of environmental factors such as lighting, 
ergonomics
and work-flow.
*	Work to maximize efficiency, accuracy, and long-term safety 
in
job tasks to ensure that the participant has the skills and tools 
to
attain/retain his or her job.

Continuous Learning:

*	Evaluate new or upgraded technologies to determine 
accessibility
and compatibility with current hardware and software platforms, 
and
current client functional needs

 Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree including 9 semester or 15 quarter hours of 
computer
science courses and three years of consultative, administrative, 
or
supervisory experience in information technology analysis, system
maintenance, or troubleshooting/problem resolution experience

OR

An Associate's degree or completion of an accredited vocational 
training
program in an information technology or related program and four 
years
of consultative, administrative, or supervisory experience in
information technology analysis, system maintenance, or
troubleshooting/problem resolution

OR

One year as an Information Technology Systems Specialist 2 or 
equivalent

And 6 months paid work experience working with Blind and Visually
Impaired Individuals;

Consultative, administrative, or supervisory experience in 
information
technology analysis, system maintenance, or 
troubleshooting/problem
resolution will substitute for education on the basis of one year 
of
experience for two years of education.

A Master's degree will substitute for one year of the required
experience.

Desirable Qualifications:

*	Background in adaptive technology assessment, training & 
support

*	Experience with adaptive software and hardware utilized by
people who are visually impaired
*	Experience with hardware and software tech support
*	Strong customer service skills
*	Strong time management and organizational systems
*	Experience in vocational rehabilitation settings

Location: This position is located in the Vancouver office which 
serves

daily
