Hello Judy and others contributing to this thread:

Here are a few items to think about, when choosing an online storage
service.

Online means you transfer the data you want to save or backup to a server
(that is someone else's computer).

This is quite different than keeping the data on your own computer at home
or at work.
This is also different than copping or backing up your files to a DVD then
storing the DVD's off sight (not in your home, or workplace) but in a
security box say at a bank.

This is done to avoid natural or man made disasters.

You will want to choose a service that will be around for a good wile. So
you may not want to choose a free service. In the same vain and to
contradict what I just wrote. Some ISP's such as Comcast provide their
customers with free storage. So you may want to check with your ISP to see
how much space they allocate for their customers.

Look for a service that will be free to try before you have to pay to play.
This way you can test out the accessibility, feasibility and generally see
if the service is compatible with your screen reader.

I would think a paid service wood have a rather simple procedure to upload
your data.

After all this I would like to say I have never backed up anything. Not a
good idea sense I have had to start over several times now. ( I just don't
have all that truly important stuff on my computer.

Kim Kamando has as one of her spongers for her radio show
www.Carbonite.com.
Their web site the offers a year subscription for $ 49.95 a year with a free
trial period.

I am a Zoomtext user and the screen reader had a bit of a problem reading
the Carbonite site.
Hope this helps

Subject: [VICUG-L] Clarification of the term "ONline" Storage

:I never heard of external hard drives being referred to as "online
: storage", but to clarify, I'm looking for off site storage where I
: can safely back up masses of data. I'm in the process of putting all
: my music on a 1 terrabyte drive and I have several other USB drives:
: all of which I want to safely back up at some distant site. Lots of
: these sites are screen reader unfriendly. I was/am asking which
: services blind folks find user friendly and easy to use. I use WindowEyes
6.1.
: Thanks again,
: Judy
