POSITION:   Assistive Technology Trainer - ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM 

(230 DAYS) - Birmingham Regional Center

E. H. Gentry Technical Facility Assistive Technology Program

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

*        Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

*         Professional experience or post secondary training in the one of
the following fields required: assistive technology, computer science,
computer technology, education/teaching, rehabilitation teaching or
counseling, information and technology training, or related field. 

*         Knowledge of assistive technology, including background in the use
of, CCTVs, screen magnifiers, screen readers, Braille translation software
and OCR software, preferred.

*         Must  provide assistive technology training for low vision and
blind consumers. 

*         Must demonstrate competency in reading and writing Braille by
scoring 80% or better on the AIDB Braille Skills Assessment inventory within
the first thirty (30) months of employment.

*         Demonstrated experience in teaching/training individuals in a
one-on-one setting preferred.

*         Must demonstrate technology competency by obtaining Microsoft IC3
certification within the first twelve (12) months of employment.

*         Must demonstrate software knowledge by obtaining MOS (Microsoft
Office User Specialist) certification within first twelve (12) months of
employment.

*         Must be experienced in using the IBM personal computer, Microsoft
operating systems and Microsoft Office software. 

*         Must be able to instruct and direct consumers in the use of large
print assistive technology software and devices. 

*         Must be able to troubleshoot closed-circuit TV's and computer
problems with large print and speech access. 

*         Will require training at E. H. Gentry Technical Facility in
Talladega. 

*         Strong writing, speaking and public relations skills required.
Must have                 

      the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

*         Background in working with individuals with disabilities
beneficial. Must possess personal qualities necessary to work successfully
in a one-on-one training situation with persons who have a disabling
condition. 

*         Due to the ever-changing nature of the field, at the request of
his/her supervisors, must be willing to learn the use of new technology and
software.

*         Must be willing to attend special training workshops and/or
conferences for upgrading skills in assistive technology. 

*         Must be able to work nights when serving clients. 

*         Must be willing to travel to other regional centers for regular
work assignments.

*         Must be willing to travel to The Gentry Facility and other
locations for occasional meetings and training sessions.

*        The successful applicant must submit to a criminal history
background information check including, but not limited to FBI and ABI
record repositories.  Upon offer of employment, the applicant must present a
non-refundable fee of $49.00 and appear for scheduled finger printing
appointment.

 

AIDB is sensitive to the needs of Blind or Visually Impaired and Deaf or
Hard of Hearing and will make reasonable accommodations for qualified
applicants and employees that do not impose undue hardship and are not
essential functions of the job.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

*        Provide instruction to students in the area of closed circuit TV's,
large print, speech access, and business application software used with
assistive technology. 

*        Maintain and distribute classroom supplies (i.e. textbooks,
worksheets, etc.) as prescribed by the E. H. Gentry Technical Facility
Assistive Technology Instructor and assist students in setting up materials
at workstations. 

*        Complete check sheets and other items necessary for tracking
student's progress. 

*        Submit a written monthly progress report on each student to the E.
H. Gentry Technical Facility Assistive Technology Instructor. 

*        Grade classwork for students. 

*        Monitor performance tasks involved in computer operations. 

*        Assist students in maintaining an inventory of work samples. 

*        Monitor classroom activities. 

*        As a representative of AIDB, follow AIDB policies and procedures
and set appropriate example for students, consumers, and other staff. 

*        Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

SALARY:      $17.66 - $21.25 per hour               Scale C4      Rank 43 

                        Direct deposit is required. 

This is a non-exempt position, and is subject to overtime and/or
compensatory time provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Upon
agreement in advance, hours worked over 40 in the work week will be taken
off at 1½ times the hours worked.
