No.  it disables the speed feature when it plays regular cd's.  I wouldn't have figured that out if I hadn't accidentally found the cd-rom with the manual hidden away.

I haven't been able to get mine to speed up on regular CD's from the

Actually it plays regular cd's as well as MP3's.  The speed-up is great
on the books.  You really would be hard pressed to notice the
compression.
