What are the 2 devices?
It's possible that one or other may require you to "Safely
remove hardware." as is common with things like USB memory
sticks.

Subject: [VICUG-L] USB question
hi everyone, I have connected two USB devices to my computer
at the same
time, and this has been to exchange files between two
digital recorders
and sometimes the C. It has been working fine, but I have
noticed that
when shutting my machine down it doesn't want to turn off,
but then I also
noticed that sometimes one of the recorders doesn't sync up
with the
computer right away, and other times it will take it a long
time. Is
there anything I can do?
