Robert, I tend to agree. I think we can look at diet/lifestyle on a continuum
unhealthy -> healthy -> paleo healthy
with very few achieveing "strict" paleo over the long term. Although I have not known pure vegans who maintained a long-term high level of health, I have known some ovo-lacto (or just lacto-) vegetarians who have. And then there are those die-hard meat-and-potato eaters who live into their 90's.
One thing that most forget is that those who engage in diet/lifestyle improvements tend to avoid the worst foods (and sugar) anyway, usually increase their levels af activity, and experiement with various supplements. My brother-in-law recently dropped 40+ lbs and improved his BP/bloodwork by strictly following the South Beach diet and vigorously exercising. We compared our eating "styles", and while there are some obvious differences between the "content" of our diets :), I can't fault him for eating whole brown rice or other minimally processed "neolithic" foods (he does tend to eat "whole" foods).
