Regarding the 19 year old who had her bone denisty tested. Bone density testing is not recommended for young women, because it is unclear how to interpret the results. But even if her bone denisty was truly low, there could be factors other than her lack of dairy:
- She could have celiac disease. Many of those who have celiac disease are also lactose intolerant. Those with celiac disease are at great risk for osteoporosis, and it is the damage from gluten that makes them less able to absorb calcium and other nutrients. It is now strongly recommended that all women with osteoporosis be tested for subclinical celiac disease because of the strong correlation.
- She could have anorexia nervosa. If she does not have menstrual cycles, she does not manufacture enough estrogen to keep her bones strong.
- She could be a rigorous athlete with a shutdown of her menstrual cycle as above.
- She could be on Depo Provera, which also shuts down the menstrual cycle.
- She could have a pituitary tumor, same as above.
So since we cannot rely on bone density testing for teens and we do not know her specific medical history, we cannot draw a correlation between her lack of dairy and her supposed low bone density.
